Modernism Lecture

Since i studied the Modernism movement last year and also did a presentation on it i like to think that i understood most of what was being said in the lecture and that my understanding of the meaning of modernism has been expanded. I took a lot of notes in the lecture and would find it easier to elaborate on what i have already written than to try explain my understanding of the entire Modernism movement. Here are my notes.

The key points that i got from the lecture and my notes were that, Modernism was from around 1750 - 1960 which is a good thing to know as a generalisation, Paris 1900 was considered the most modern city on the planet until the early 20th century when it was then considered to be New York, The city was the object of study for artists is the Modernist period because it was a new kind of study and had only just come into existence and it was a change from the traditional portrait and figure paintings, people were fascinated by the idea of being lost in the city or lost in technology and the fact that you could be surrounded by so many people but not know anyone.

This image is a play on 'lost in technology'

Modernist art, Form follows function, Internationalism, Moderist art - A response to changes in the world, its a cheaper design for the masses, Make for all.

Fashion, Rich - Poor, Cinema, Painting Obsolete, Photography, Theory of relativity, Degeneration.

Some notes from the Seminar after the lecture. Useful in further understanding how Modernism can relate to me.

What all this means to me?

Since my specialism is game design there is a limit to what Modernism can mean to me but, with almost everything being a copy of a copy of something Modernist, almost every aspect of modern things has a Modernist basis and so in that way to some extent it relates to me as a game designer. After the lecture it is true that it is easier to spot Modernist themes and ideas showing through modern things E.G. The modernist idea that 'less equals more' shown in the image of the Bauhaus cutlery set in the way that they dont have any patterns or designs they are only cutlery and thats what it should look like, also the idea of 'Truth to materials' where things made or designed to look like the way that they are made or designed E.G. The Eiffel Tower is a great example of this because it is made of just metal girders and is not disguised to look like it is whole or made of classy wood or any other material than what it actually is, metal girders, also this idea is shown in the snowy mountain picture below as the snow and birds are just white brushstrokes and are meant to look like brushstrokes which adds to why the picture is pleasing to the eye even if we see the brushstrokes as what they are depicting. The final and most important point that i picked up from the lecture is that technology inspires artists, the Kaiserpanorama is a good example of this along with early photography which really challenges what painting can do, this is particularly obvious in the recent film avatar where the producer of the film waited for the modern day technology before producing his film so he could have the maximum visual effects which more clearly show what he was trying to portray in the film, This can be seen all the time in the modern day world (technology inspires the artist) in things like XBOX Kinect, 3D TV, Blu Ray where all the media produced is done as a response to the new medias and technology available. In that way Modernism relates to me.
