FMP Lore and World Building

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDFvR3NjEUc

I was told by a friend about this video when I was discussing with him the difficulties of creating lore for a world from scratch. The amount of things that need to be considered are enormous, for example creating concept art for a small town might be easy, but then naming the town - why it is named that - is it named that by other people - is it named the same in other languages - how long has the town been there - why is it here and not 3 miles in another direction - what kind of people live there - why is the design of the buildings like they are - and so on. This video helped me think about why things are where they are and made everything much easier when placing things (especially on the map I have made) as well as planning out the route the main character of my story will take and why.

Overall I have come to realise that world building is a job in itself and it takes a certain kind of mind to be able to work at it for a long period of time. I guess writers will find this sort of thing easier but I have had a lot of fun finding ways to create new lore for my world and implement it.

FMP Kickstarter started

I have been looking for a while now at the idea of trying to get a project I am working on funded, one of the easiest ways of doing this would be on a project start up site like kickstarter. I will be making a project on it soon (probably something related with my FMP project) to see if I can get any support and maybe break out into the game making industry at last.

There as projects that run into the millions for funding and some which are 100% funded at £500, this means it is a good site for large scale projects as well as small. A small few £100 project would be the perfect thing for me to do in the time I will have after Uni, I will be putting a lot of time into this venture when the bulk of Uni work is over.

PPP3 FFXIII Contest Entry

My entry to the FFXIII drawing competition on DA, I learned about this competition very late but still had a good to try and push myself and see what I came out with. I am happy with the results and the fact that it only took 4 isn hours to complete. Also the fact that Tetsuya Nomura is the artist who will be marking the entries was a huge push to try and enter something with such little time to do so. He has been one of the biggest inspirations to me as an artist and I have played nearly all of the Final Fantasy games over the years and even studied him earlier in college.

PPP3 Webinar with Artist Jonas De-Ro

Another online webinar that proved useful and gave me another good source of inspiration to keep working from, Jonas De-Ro is the name of the artist this webinar focused on and who is the artist who created the below images. I particularly like the way he uses photo textures to bring out all of the detail of an image without actually having much to look at sometimes. From what I learned about his process he varies his paintings and images from 100% painted to sometimes 100% photo textures, he says it is dependant on what exactly the image is trying to accomplish that pushes a painting toward hand drawn or photo textured.

FMP Game Ideas

These are notes I have been taking over the past few weeks while trying to decide fully how the game I am making is going to play and also what direction the art and story were also going to take. Within the next week I will have a definite storyline and character description as well as a little backstory and lore about the world the gamespace will be set in. With a basis for the game bible ready then, I will start putting together the Art book which goes with the game as part of my project and be well on my was a well as on schedule to completing my project on time and to a good standard.

Anyway these notes show exactly what I want the game aspect to include.

Sunday Morning Lol Contest

http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/community/contests/sunday-morning-lolz-contest-update

This is another competition I entered for the fun of it, the more time spent on something the better it gets, and I could have spent a lot more time on it if I hadn't have had deadlines all over the place! Anyway a bit of league comedy and an hour or so of fun drawing this was a nice break from the slog of uni work.

FMP InDesign Artbook Creation

InDesign is a CS6 program I have looked at in relation to the art book side of my FMP (final major project) project, from this short video above I have found that it looks to be a powerful tool for book design and creation, I will see if I can get a trial version of the program to make some templates and see if they work or not for my art book.

Below is a very rough layout of what I think my ark book may look like when it is finished. I like the idea of a border but will find further reference in other ark books which have worked recently. Things like 'the art of' for recent films will help me a lot when deciding how I am going to do the layout of my art book. I have looked at 'The Skillful Huntsman' to name one already referenced book, the layouts in that book are simple but effective and didn't particularly have very themed pages to go with the work they were displaying but all around seemed to get the artwork across more without distracting from it with different fonts or page layouts. This is probably the route I am going to take but will see with more reference material to look at and decide upon.
